What Is the Inner Critic? 

That critical voice that echoes inside your head – sometimes is helpful, and sometime is hurtful.

That hurtful voice is called the “self-critic,” “inner critic”, "judger" or “pathological critic.”  

The negative thoughts that characterize self-critic become problematic when you believe these thoughts to be true. In these cases, the judging voice of your self-critic strongly affects your feelings, behavior and actions.

The goal of this course is to identify your own unique internal critic voice and work with it, instead of engaging in the battle of self doubt and low self worth.  

How do I silence the Inner Critic?

A powerful way to reduce the effect of self-critical thoughts is by observing them.

Rather than being fully identified with negative, self-critical thoughts and believing them to be true, you get to shift into observation mode and stand back and simply witness these negative thoughts.

Please know that the Judger’s internal voice does not like to be challenged, instead it likes to get stronger and criticize even more.

The hands on exercises provided in this course are designed to provide you with valuable tools to take you through the observational journey so you can increase your awareness of your inner critic and shift into a more self-compassionate attitude towards yourself.

The Brain & Inner Critic

A more scientific explanation of the origins of the inner critic locates it in particular parts of our brains. More specifically, scientists found that we have a primitive “survivor brain” that is tasked with physical survival and the fight-or-flight response to danger.

This part of our brains is highly attuned to danger.  Hyper-vigilant, it is constantly on the lookout for threats and relentlessly compares, contrasts and finds you wanting.

It also involves the limbic system and the amygdala, which regulate our emotional responses, and can trigger the emission of the stress hormone cortisol.  

Originally, our inner critic had a positive function: to ensure our survival. This includes not just spotting danger in our environment but also inner work in the form of psychological sense making.

The most powerful way to silence your inner critic is to understand it, identify it's job description and then befriend it.

In the Understanding the Inner Critic exercise you will find a great tool for raising awareness about how your inner critic works, then outline it's job description.

In the Befriending Your Inner Critic exercise, you are encouraged to think about a situation in which you were in a judging mindset, judging ourselves, others, or a particular situation very harshly.  

After completing these exercises you will engage in self reflection and
you are encourage to consider your Inner Critic from the perspective of an outside Inner Coach, and then transform your Inner Critic into your Inner Coach.

Positive Psychology?


Positive Psychology is the scientific study of people's strengths and aims to maximize the human potential, help you become the best version of yourself, having you focus on your character strengths and behaviors, as opposed to your weaknesses.

Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living, focusing on both individual and societal well-being.

It studies "positive subjective experience, positive individual traits, and positive institutions and it aims to improve quality of life.





Many positive psychology exercises are considered classics – and for good reason.

While activities such as gratitude journaling and loving-kindness meditation have been shown time and again to lead to positive outcomes, the goal of this course is to provide a variety of new and novel ways to include positive psychology in your personal growth.

These science-based positive psychology exercises explore fundamental aspects of psychology including strengths, values and self-compassion (to name a few) will give you the tools you need to enhance the your wellbeing and set goals for an achievable outcome.


Why?

The inner critic plays a significant role in your Anxiety: it has the power to make you feel constantly anxious.

The inner critic is hyper-vigilant, it constantly spots and point out danger, both to your physical and psychological health. More often than not, it catastrophize, split, exaggerate, and magnify the bad and minimize the good in our lives.

It may engage in paranoid mind reading, attributing bad motives to other people’s words and actions. It often lives in constant expectation of punishment and falling from grace, and fixates on signs of lost love and affection in your interactions with others.

The inner critic is hyper-sensitively attuned to danger signals and with a relentless focus on what could go wrong, it may instill chronic anxiety in you.

Numerous studies have investigated links between anxiety and strong inner critical voices.

I am not here reciting what I've read, but I am expressing what I have observed that works wonders, and building on the work of Carl Jung the father of Analytical Psychology, William James, the father of Functional Psychology, Milton Erickson, the father of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, and Martin Seligman the father of Positive Psychology.

Carl Jung founded the analytical psychology movement and is known for the collective unconscious, archetypes and individuation.
Jung found that there is a collective unconscious all people share and helped people better understand their unconscious mind.

During the last thirty years of his life, Jung embraced Alchemy as a crucial component of his research in psychology. He found in alchemy a perfect symbiosis of ideas and images that matched his own understanding of the complexity of the psyche, affirming his beliefs regarding the unconscious's drive and direction.

Alchemy seeks to transform the lead of the unconscious  into the gold of wisdom, liberating your soul. The alchemists understood the connection between the anima and the soul - “the innermost and most secret numinous of human.”


In 1998, Martin Seligman strongly encouraged the field of psychology to widen its scope and move beyond human problems and pathology to human flourishing.  

Rather than merely focusing on what is wrong with people and fixing their problems, the focus should also be on what is right with people and boosting their strengths.

Born in 1942, Seligman is credited as the father of Positive Psychology and its efforts to scientifically explore human potential.

Milton Erickson's clinical practice conveyed an extremely advanced and nuanced understanding of the human mind that modern science continues to validate to this day in realation to individual’s unconscious minds.  

But far more importantly, he understood the value of intelligently and creatively acting on this knowledge, and as a result pioneered effective novel approaches to activate the healing potential of the continuously intelligent and creative unconscious’ of his patients.
